About
This blog was originally created to share our recipes with our friends, but anyone popping by is of course welcome to try them! From time to time we also post other stuff than recipes here – things we find interesting.
You find a lot of vegetables, herbs and olive oil in our kitchen, and many of our recipes are of a genuine Western Turkish origin, or at least have a Mediterranean touch. The first name of this blog, Mostly Turkish Recipes, clearly indicated this, while the current name, Bananas and Potatoes, was chosen because we believe life shouldn’t be taken too seriously.
Living closer to the Polar Circle than to the Mediterranean Sea doesn’t always make it easy to find all ingredients. The good thing for any other Northern European inhabitant is, that the recipes you find here are based on ingredients we are able to find up here, generally at the super market. One thing you may miss though is the home made tomato paste we often use, or salca, as it is called in Turkey.

Turkish Tomato Paste
Turkish: Domates Salcasi
To make our “salca”, you need a huge sack of ripe tomatoes, another one of red peppers (sweet), a lot of salt, some olive oil, large trays, knifes, water, a bunch of people and some hot summer days – and now we are talking the kind of summer days when you prefer NOT staying in the sun (unless you are a desperate tourist, of course).
Maybe you can find something similar in your supermarket, but nothing is like the home made, you know.
Happy cooking and enjoy the meals!
